About
Who is AlphaGrange?
AlphaGrange is a land clearing and wildfire mitigation contractor based in Cascade, Idaho, serving homeowners, ranchers, and landowners throughout Valley County and surrounding areas. Founded on a decade of Idaho timber and land clearing experience, AlphaGrange operates with one principle: work doesn't end until it exceeds what you expected.
Our founder has felled timber and cleared land across the region — not as an outsider, but as a neighbor who understands exactly what wildfire can take from a Valley County community. That experience shapes every project we take on.
Service area: Cascade, McCall, Donnelly, New Meadows, Council, and surrounding Valley County communities. Free on-site estimates throughout the region.

Defensible Space: What It Is & Why It Matters
Defensible space is a buffer zone of cleared or modified vegetation around your home that reduces the risk of wildfire igniting your structure. It also gives firefighters a safe area to work when defending your property.
In Valley County, Idaho — where properties border dense pine forest and wildfire hazard potential is rated Very High to Extreme by the USDA Forest Service — defensible space is the single most effective protection available to homeowners short of evacuation.
Zone 1
0 – 30 ft
The "lean, clean, green" zone. Non-combustible or very low-fuel vegetation only. No wood piles, no dense shrubs, no branches within 10 ft of chimney.
Zone 2
30 – 100 ft
Reduced fuel zone. Trees spaced so canopies don't touch. Ladder fuels removed. Brush cleared. Fire can't easily travel from plant to plant.
Zone 3
100 ft +
Ongoing management zone. Regular thinning and fuel reduction on the broader property to slow fire before it reaches Zones 1 and 2.
Idaho law: While defensible space is not currently mandated by state law for most rural Idaho properties, many insurance carriers now require documented defensible space for coverage in high-risk zones. AlphaGrange can provide documentation of completed work.

Funding
Government Funding for Wildfire Mitigation
Many Valley County landowners don't realize that federal and state programs can cover a significant portion of wildfire mitigation costs. AlphaGrange works with landowners to identify available funding before beginning work.
Up to 75% of your project cost may be covered
Federal and state cost-share programs exist specifically to help Idaho landowners reduce wildfire risk. These programs are underutilized — most qualifying properties never apply.
USDA NRCS — EQIP
Environmental Quality Incentives Program. Covers fuels reduction, brush management, and prescribed grazing on qualifying properties. Applications accepted year-round.
Idaho Dept of Lands
IDL offers cost-share assistance for defensible space and community wildfire protection projects throughout Idaho, including Valley County.
FEMA Hazard Mitigation
Post-disaster and pre-disaster mitigation grants available through Idaho Office of Emergency Management for qualifying projects.
Idaho Firewise
Community-based program providing resources, recognition, and potential funding assistance for properties in participating communities.

Risk
Wildfire Risk in Valley County, Idaho
Valley County sits within one of the highest wildfire hazard zones in the American West. According to USDA Forest Service Wildfire Risk to Communities data, large portions of the Cascade, McCall, and Donnelly areas are rated Very High or Extreme on the Wildfire Hazard Potential index.
Key risk factors in Valley County:
- Dense ponderosa pine and lodgepole pine stands — highly combustible, especially beetle-kill timber
- Steep terrain — fire moves faster and more intensely uphill
- Limited access roads — slows suppression response and evacuation
- Extended dry seasons — Idaho summers create long windows of extreme fire weather
- Increasing beetle kill — dead standing timber dramatically increases fuel loads

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between fuels reduction and defensible space?
Defensible space is specifically the cleared zone immediately around your home — typically 0–100 feet — designed to protect your structure. Fuels reduction is a broader term for reducing combustible vegetation anywhere on your property to lower overall fire intensity and spread. Defensible space is a type of fuels reduction, but fuels reduction work can extend well beyond the defensible space zones.
How long does a typical project take?
Most residential defensible space projects complete in 1–2 days. Larger land clearing projects of 2–5 acres typically take 3–5 days. Multi-acre fuels reduction projects may take 1–2 weeks depending on terrain and density. AlphaGrange provides a detailed timeline with every written estimate.
Do I need a permit to clear land in Valley County, Idaho?
Permit requirements depend on the scope of work, location, and whether the land is within city limits. Most rural land clearing in unincorporated Valley County does not require a clearing permit. However, work near waterways may require Idaho DEQ notification, and significant timber harvest may require coordination with Idaho Department of Lands. AlphaGrange can advise on permit requirements during the site assessment.
What happens to the debris after clearing?
AlphaGrange offers several debris handling options: forestry mulching processes material in place and returns it to the soil; debris can be piled for burning (when burn permits are available); material can be chipped and spread as mulch; or debris can be hauled off-site. The best option depends on your property, terrain, and goals. We discuss this during the site assessment.
Can AlphaGrange work on steep terrain?
Yes. AlphaGrange has extensive experience on the steep terrain common throughout Valley County. Steep slope work (over 30% grade) carries a 15–25% surcharge due to increased equipment and safety requirements. We assess slope conditions during every site visit and price accordingly.
Does AlphaGrange work with insurance companies?
AlphaGrange can provide documentation of completed defensible space and fuels reduction work that meets insurance carrier requirements. If your insurer requires evidence of mitigation work for coverage, we can provide a written scope of work and completion record. Contact your insurance carrier for their specific documentation requirements.
How do I get a free estimate from AlphaGrange?
