Fire Mitigation & Land Services

AlphaGrange provides the full range of wildfire mitigation and land clearing services for homeowners, ranchers, and landowners throughout Valley County.

Fire Mitigation

Defensible Space

Strategic vegetation clearing around your home that gives it — and firefighters — a fighting chance when fire approaches.

Fire Mitigation

Fuels Reduction

Systematic removal of the fuel loads that turn a manageable fire into a catastrophic one. Surface, ladder, and canopy fuels addressed.

Fire Mitigation

Ladder Fuel Removal

Eliminate the vegetation pathway that carries ground fire into your tree canopies — one of the most targeted fire risk reductions available.

Fire Mitigation

Tree Thinning

Selective removal of competing timber to reduce canopy density, improve forest health, and lower fire intensity potential on your land.

Fire Mitigation

Brush Clearing

Dense brush is among the most combustible fuel types in Idaho. We clear it with precision — protecting what should stay, removing what shouldn't.

Fire Mitigation

Firebreak Installation

Strategic fuel gaps that interrupt fire spread, create safer suppression conditions, and protect your property boundaries.

Land Services

Land Clearing

Reveal what your property is truly capable of. We clear timber, brush, and vegetation to open land for development, ranching, or improved access.

Land Services

Site Development

The critical first step before any build. We prepare raw Idaho land — clearing, grading prep, and access — so construction can begin on solid ground.

Land Services

Timber Removal

A decade of Idaho timber felling experience. Hazard trees, beetle kill, site clearing — done safely and efficiently in any terrain.

Land Services

Access Road Clearing

Open your property to vehicles, equipment, and emergency response. Roads that serve both day-to-day use and fire season evacuation.

Land Services

Vegetation Management

Wildfire risk is ongoing. Ongoing vegetation management keeps your property resilient and your mitigation work working year after year.

Built on a Decade of Idaho Experience

"I've lived all over this great country. But I've never called anywhere but Idaho home."

AlphaGrange was built on a decade of working this land and watching what wildfire can take from a community. Our founder has felled timber across the region — not as an outsider, but as a neighbor who knows exactly what's at stake when fire moves through Valley County.

We don't clearcut when selective fuels reduction will do. We don't rush when the job deserves time. And we don't leave until the work exceeds what you expected when you called us.

We serve local homeowners first, ranchers second, and developers who want a partner who respects the land they're working.

The hillside lot looked like a long shot. Steep terrain, heavy dead timber, no road in. But with careful selective removal — preserving what should stay, taking out what shouldn't — the view opened up, a home site revealed itself, and an access road was cut through the timber.

Not long after, a trailer was parked on that hillside. A new homestead had begun.

Government Funding Available

Many Valley County landowners qualify for federal and state cost-share programs that cover 50–75% of project costs. AlphaGrange helps identify and apply for funding before work begins.

Up to 75% of your project cost may be covered

These programs are underutilized — most qualifying properties never apply. AlphaGrange can guide you through the process.

USDA NRCS — EQIP

Covers fuels reduction, brush management, and vegetation management on qualifying properties. Applications accepted year-round.

Idaho Dept of Lands

Cost-share assistance for defensible space and community wildfire protection projects throughout Valley County.

FEMA Hazard Mitigation

Pre-disaster mitigation grants available through Idaho Office of Emergency Management for qualifying projects.

Idaho Firewise

Community-based program providing resources and potential funding assistance for participating communities.

Understanding Defensible Space

Defensible space is a buffer zone of cleared vegetation around your home that slows wildfire and gives firefighters a safe area to work. In Valley County — rated Very High to Extreme wildfire hazard — it is the most effective protection available.

Zone 10 – 30 ft

The "lean, clean, green" zone. Non-combustible or very low-fuel vegetation only. No wood piles or dense shrubs.

Zone 230 – 100 ft

Reduced fuel zone. Trees spaced so canopies don't touch. Ladder fuels removed. Brush cleared.

Zone 3100 ft +

Ongoing management zone. Regular thinning and fuel reduction on the broader property.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between fuels reduction and defensible space?
Defensible space is specifically the cleared zone immediately around your home — typically 0–100 feet — designed to protect your structure. Fuels reduction is a broader term for reducing combustible vegetation anywhere on your property to lower overall fire intensity and spread. Defensible space is a type of fuels reduction, but fuels reduction work can extend well beyond the defensible space zones.
How long does a typical project take?
Most residential defensible space projects complete in 1–2 days. Larger land clearing projects of 2–5 acres typically take 3–5 days. Multi-acre fuels reduction projects may take 1–2 weeks depending on terrain and density. AlphaGrange provides a detailed timeline with every written estimate.
Do I need a permit to clear land in Valley County, Idaho?
Most rural land clearing in unincorporated Valley County does not require a clearing permit. However, work near waterways may require Idaho DEQ notification, and significant timber harvest may require coordination with Idaho Department of Lands. AlphaGrange can advise on permit requirements during the site assessment.
What happens to the debris after clearing?
AlphaGrange offers several options: forestry mulching processes material in place; debris can be piled for burning when burn permits are available; material can be chipped and spread as mulch; or debris can be hauled off-site. We discuss the best option during the site assessment.
Does the government pay for wildfire mitigation in Idaho?
Yes. The USDA NRCS EQIP program and Idaho Department of Lands both offer cost-share funding that can cover 50–75% of wildfire mitigation costs for qualifying properties. AlphaGrange works with landowners to identify and apply for available funding before starting work.
Can AlphaGrange work on steep terrain?
Yes. AlphaGrange has extensive experience on the steep terrain common throughout Valley County. Steep slope work over 30% grade carries a 15–25% surcharge due to increased equipment and safety requirements. We assess slope conditions during every site visit and price accordingly.
